Thousands turn out for first annual Hokie Bugfest

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Department of Entomology hosted its first Hokie Bugfest on the Ag Quad. Almost 2,000 children and adults from near and far turned out to participate in arts and crafts, feed pet tarantulas, admire exotic bugs, and watch the Alberti Flea Circus. Other activities included a campus tree tour, casting pool, robotic bugs, and a screening of the movie “Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.”

More than 300 children received a junior entomologist certificate, earned by visiting multiple exhibits. The exhibits featured honey bees, bed bugs, termites, stink bugs, cockroaches, and other critters. Even the HokieBird got into the act. The Hokie Bugfest was a fun and educational event that revealed some of the mysteries of the insect world.
