Sustainable Vegetable Gardening Series

  • Growing our own food, using nature as a guide and incorporating sustainable practices is good for our bodies and good for the earth.  These three classes cover the essential topics — planning the garden, using organic sustainable techniques to develop healthy productive gardens, and growing good garden soil. These practices are on display at our Teaching Garden and showcased in our Saturday in the Garden programs.

Feb. 2 Part I – Planning: Overview of organic, sustainable vegetable gardening.  Choosing a site, selecting what to grow, scheduling when and where to plant.  Using the garden calendar.  Observing and keeping records.
Feb. 16 Part II – Sustainable Practices: Learn about cover crops, compost, crop rotation, succession, companion planting, farmscaping, seed saving, and seed starting (plant processes, propagation, seedling development, selection of growing media), transplanting, and extending the seasons (spring, fall, winter gardening).
March 9 Part III – Growing Soil: Prepare, improve, and cultivate your garden soil organically and sustainably.  Good garden soil and how to get it.  The soil-food web.  Best practices for fertility, tillage & cultivation, and composting.  Minimizing pests and disease.

March 23: 10 Steps to a Greener lawn

  • 10 a.m.
  • Master Gardener John Miller will share 10 ways you can keep your grass green and the water clean.  This lawn care seminar will answer your lawn care questions.
  • Topics to be covered: Lawn Care Calendar, Soil Testing, Amending Soil, Adjusting the pH, Proper Mowing, Weed Control, Disease and Insect Control, Aeration, Fertilization, Seeding & Lawn Repair.
