Extension agents win national awards

Jon Vest: VAAEA/NACAA Distinguished Service Award Winner from Virginia

Floyd County has a diverse agriculture makeup and varied extension programming efforts to meet the needs in the county. Jon strives to provide timely and relevant educational programs for pesticide, horticulture, livestock, and water quality. Providing extension educational programs for producers is as important as teaching the county’s youth. Jon’s efforts are well-regarded by his clientele and co-workers making him worthy of this award.

Sixty agents rom across the country who have been in their careers for at least 10 years  received this prestigious award at the NACAA Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference in Charleston, SC, on July 18.


Wythe Morris: VAAEA/NACAA Achievement Award Winner from Virginia

Commercial horticulture is Wythe Morris’ specialty, but he is also a trusted friend and colleague to all who work with him. In 2006, Wythe won the Southwest District’s Agent’s Choice award, which is given to the most respected agent in the district after a vote by their colleagues. When GAP certification requirements threatened to squeeze out producers, Wythe acted swiftly to provide them with the training and guidelines they needed not only to survive, but succeed.

He joins 62 agents with careers of 10 years or less from across the country who received this prestigious award at the NACAA Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference in Charleston, SC, on July 17.
