US agriculture students take home the gold in the Australian Universities Crops Competition!

AIFS Study Abroad Opportunities

1. Berlin Germany, offered in cooperation with Humboldt University

“Land in the City – Green in the City” – This is a 3 credit summer course that looks at urban agriculture in one of Germany’s most fascinating cities.

Students examine functions of agriculture and horticulture in the city landscape including ecological and institutional conditions, social function of urban agriculture and gardening, conservation of resources and recycling of waste. Students will meet participants of projects and visit example of urban agriculture in Berlin.


2. San Jose, Costa Rica, offered in cooperation with Veritas University

This is a summer and semester program with multiple course offerings taught in English in the Biological Sciences to include:

Environmental Impact and Social Development, Tropical Botany, Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Renewable Energies (semester only.)


3. January Term program in the Galapagos Islands, in cooperation with Universidad San Francisco de Quito

A two week program with one course that examines Ecosystems and Biodiversity in the Galapagos.

Fellowship Opportunity for Students

The Kirchner Food Fellowship is pleased to announce its 2015 application period is open until April 15th.

The purpose of the Kirchner Food Fellowship program is to foster the development of students who have the practical skills and knowledge to make effective investments in emerging agricultural technologies that have the possibility of addressing global food security. The Fellows have full discretion over their investment fund during a unique learning experience. A Fellowship may be held by a student currently enrolled at any university in North America. The Kirchner Food Fellows will be selected by June 30th, 2015 with the program commencing in August.

Permaculture Immersion Internship

via Plentitud Eco-Educational Initiatives
This two-week internship offers individual training in the practical application of sustainable living skills at our Teaching Center, located in the tropical mountain highlands of Las Marias, Puerto Rico. Our program blends hands-on work with conceptual learning, rewarding interns with education through action in an intentional community setting.

Fall Program Leader Pre-Departure Workshop

The GEO will be holding the Fall Program Leader Pre-Departure Workshop focused on health, safety and risk management on Friday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., in the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown, Meeting Room B.

Scholarships for highschool students to study language

The U.S. Department of State Announces Scholarships for American High School Students to Study Abroad

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) offers merit-based scholarships to study one of seven critical foreign languages:  Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian and Turkish.  The NSLI-Y program is designed to immerse participants in the cultural life of the host country, provide formal and informal language practice, and spark a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.   The application deadline for summer 2015 and academic year 2015-2016 programs is October 30, 2014. The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program offers  merit-based scholarships to spend an academic year in countries that may include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Oman, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, and Turkey.This program increases understanding between people in the United States and people in countries with significant Muslim populations.  Students live with host families, attend local high schools, do community service, and complete a capstone project. Applications for academic year 2015-16 programs are due January 7, 2015.  Visit for more information.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) offers merit-based scholarships to spend an academic year in Germany.  The programwas established in 1983 to celebrate German-American friendship based on common values of democracy.  Students live with host families, attend local schools, and participate in community life in Germany.  For more information and application deadlines, visit the organization in charge of recruitment for your state at

¡Hola from Aventuras Agricolas!

Adventuras Agricolas was a faculty-led study abroad trip to Spain (Barcelona and Valencia) from January 2-16, 2014. Students had Spanish lessons in the morning pertaining to a specific agricultural operation they would visit. In the afternoon, they would visit the operation, practice Spanish, learn the processes and even get to try products. The agricultural operations included wineries, dairies, orange groves, and farms.
